The Otsuka Pharmaceutical Group traces its origins to the 1921 establishment of Otsuka Pharmaceutical Factory, Inc. as a producer of chemical compounds. Production and sale of intravenous solutions began in 1946. Subsequently, the company continued to expand, with the establishment of Otsuka Chemical Company Co., Ltd. in 1950, Taiho Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd. in 1963, and Otsuka Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd. (OPC) in 1964.
At present, the Otsuka Pharmaceutical Group consists of 106 companies employing approximately 33,000 people in 18 nations and regions throughout the world. Group companies are engaged in a diverse array of businesses, including pharmaceuticals, food and beverages, chemicals, and art ceramics.
Established in 1964, OPC contributes to better health for people the world over under the company philosophy of 'Otsuka - people creating new products for better health worldwide.'
Based on the two main pillars of pharmaceuticals that help treat illness and consumer products that contribute to day-to-day wellness, OPC is engaged in the research and development, manufacture, and sales of innovative, creative products that can make a difference in people's health and well-being in markets worldwide. Cultivating an ethical perspective and active culture as befitting a company involved in the betterment of human life, OPC aims for symbiotic relationships with local communities and coexistence with the natural environment, with the goal of creating value on a global scale.
From our initial focus on the intravenous solutions business, Otsuka has grown to be a leader in the field of nutrition management in healthcare settings. In 1971, we initiated development of our own new drugs, consolidating our position as an international pharmaceuticals manufacturer as we actively expanded into overseas markets. We also are engaged in the development of consumer products, and have launched numerous products that have created new market categories.
Today, OPC operations are undertaken by six business divisions, ranging from pharmaceuticals to consumer products. In our persistent pursuit of a globally viable business model, our operations support people’s lifestyles across a broad range of areas, from treating illness to promoting day-to-day health and wellness.
